I’ve heard it a lot recently: “Start showing up for your own life.”
And you know what? I hate that line. Like, WHAT!? Was I not showing up these past 30 years already? Was my endless hard work to try and balance taking care of my family, my job, my home, and my personal life, not enough?
I need to do MORE?
Hustle MORE, rest MORE, exercise MORE, sleep MORE, enjoy MORE, work MORE, be present MORE, buy MORE.
The list goes on.
“Girl, do this.”
“Girl, don’t do that.”
It’s an endless storm of mixed-messages swirling around me, telling me to just keep striving. Everyone seems to have the magical solution on how I can single-handedly attain happiness in my life, with an endless effort to BE MORE.
And you know what my response is?
Cuz, guess what, friends? I’m going to say something counter-cultural:
I AM NOT ENOUGH.
Yes, that’s right. And, guess what?
YOU ARE NOT ENOUGH EITHER.
Because, did you forget? We are SINNERS. We are inadequate. We are failures. No matter how hard I try to do it all on my own, be the perfect parent, friend, wife, etc.… it’s NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN.
And the solution isn’t simply to TRY HARDER. To “show up” for my own life more, rely on myself more, hustle more, buy more, exercise more, or to wash my dang face.
Instead, the solution is to come to terms with the fact that I am NOT enough, and I NEED JESUS.
The sooner we embrace that, the sooner we will find the peace, and joy, and MEANING for our lives that we’re so desperately searching for.
Like I said…
You are not enough. But JESUS IS.
His GRACE is.
His MERCY is.
And his GOODNESS is.
THAT’s what we need more of.
You can rest easy knowing that HE will mend your broken pieces, HE will pour grace over your shortcomings, HE will give your life value and worth and PURPOSE. HE will forgive you over and over again, and turn your broken life WHOLE and beautiful, and perfect in HIS name.
